Balance & Brains Workshop (2 hours)
In this workshop we work on techniques to improve balance as well as exercises for improved cognitive ability with a mind/body connection.
Balance: We can all use help with our balance, and as we age we begin to notice a decreased sense of balance, and we know that a fall can affect our lives, the lives of our family or students drastically. And our ability to balance, cross mid-line of our bodies, and move in non-linear ways has a direct and positive effect on our brain functions.
Neuroplasticity: The brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. Neuroplasticity shows that the brain is remarkably adaptable and able to create new neural pathways in response to stimulus in your environment.
There are many ways in which we can challenge our own minds…
*Learning new things
*Reading, writing, puzzles, games
*Exercise -The more we move the more we stimulate neuron growth
Helps with cognitive accelerations- abilities- meaning our brains can think
faster, sharper, react quicker, movement in general is great.
*Reduce stress (Stress can seriously hinder brain function)
*Calming Practices- Yoga, Tai Chi, Meditation, Chanting
*Pranayama (Getting extra oxygen to your brain can help improve brain function overall)
*Balance postures force the brain to work more equally between left and right hemispheres, direct our focus
Neurobics: Non routine ways of moving the body or thinking stimulates physiological changes in brain. Being able to think outside the box- Creating greater flexibility in the brain.
*Use non-dominant hand
*Stimulate sense smell, smells can stimulate memory
*Cross midline of body
*Listen to different sounds
